I’m on a mission to help those who are searching for a way to live a fulfilling life. To be the best YOU, you can be. There are so many things that we do because we are programmed to do them. Our obsession with social media and the internet as a whole has taken the place of our inner voice and become our adviser. What we read and watch informs the way we look, the way we talk, the way we act and even the way we think. We are a generation of followers, lacking the courage to be ourselves.
What follows are things most of us do that are actually hurting us and impeding us from feeling good about life. I’ve divided the blogs into bite sized chunks and will give you 5 things you should stop doing, at a time.
Change your way of thinking and get ready for a tsunami of positive vibes.
STOP LISTENING TO OTHER PEOPLE
I don’t mean you should stop listening to good advice, what I mean is people who think they know how to live your life better than you do. If you have a great idea, as crazy as that idea may sound, don’t let others sway you away from it. When I was in high school, I decided I wanted to be a rock star. Of course a lot of people told me it was a bad idea, that I would never make it, it was too difficult and that I was throwing my life away. They were right about one thing, it wasn’t an easy road! However, the path to rock stardom taught me about perseverance, dedication and hard work. It also taught me how to listen to my heart and express my feelings openly. It showed me that difficult things are worth fighting for. I also learned that if you do not fail, you are not trying hard enough. Being afraid of taking risks, therefore playing it safe, will prevent you from finding fulfillment in life.
STOP DOING WHAT OTHERS EXPECT OF YOU
Who’s life are you living anyway? If you don’t take care of your life, your happiness and your goals, nobody else will. Doing what somebody else wants is only serving them and their agenda. They might mean well, but at the end of the day you are the one that has to deal with the consequences of your actions. Take a moment, step back and figure out what you want to do.
STOP BEING SOMETHING YOU’RE NOT
All our lives, from the time we’re children, somebody has been trying to mold us into the person we should become. Be it an athlete, a scholar, a classically trained musician, a doctor or a lawyer. Maybe it’s family tradition, or maybe you just want to fit in; be part of a group. Being something you’re not is the same thing as lying to yourself. Be a maverick, be unique, not a copy of those around you. Be yourself and be happy.
STOP FOLLOWING THE HERD
Imagine getting on a bus, or a train, or even an airplane, just because everyone else is getting on. Where is it going? What if it’s traveling in a completely different direction to your destination? Without even realizing it, you could be putting even more distance between you and your goal, therefore canceling out the hard work you’ve done so far. Don’t follow the herd, the herd has no idea where it’s going. It’s following someone else. If you are more comfortable being a follower than a leader, it’s OK, but at least make sure you are following the path that’s right for you. You’ll almost certainly find others on the same path, but the bus won’t be as crowded.
STOP WAITING FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN
The difference between dreams and goals is that dreams don’t come true. You have to actively pursue them as goals and work hard at attaining them. Even if your dream is to win the lottery, you still have to buy a ticket. You can’t just sit there and hope it happens someday. You may still not win, but at least you’re in the game.
